forms when minerals in boiler water settles out on the inside of boiler surfaces. Scale accumulates when improperly treated water comes in contact with the hottest parts of the boiler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common components of scale are lime, magnesium and iron oxides (rust). As a result, the flue gas temperature rises \u2013 as does the energy cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boilers that burn solid fuels (such as coal and biomass) have a high fouling tendency, whereas those that burn liquid fuels (particularly refined oils) have a low fouling tendency. Certain water treatment chemicals can then be injected depending on the results. Boiler water is tested daily in small, low-pressure boiler plants and every hour in large, high-pressure plants.
