Application of Boilers in Dairy Plants

Pasteurization
  • To kill harmful bacteria and pathogens, ensuring the milk is safe for consumption.
  • Boilers generate steam that heats the milk to a specific temperature (usually around 72°C) for a set period (typically 15-20 seconds) before it is rapidly cooled.
Sterilisation
  •  Done to achieve a higher level of sterilisation for products with a longer shelf
  • Steam from boilers is used to heat the milk to a higher temperature (around 135°C) for a longer time (up to 30 minutes) in an autoclave or continuous steriliser.
CIP (Clean-in-Place) Systems
  • To clean and sanitise processing equipment, tanks, and pipelines without disassembling them.
  • Steam from boilers is used to heat cleaning solutions and rinse water, ensuring effective cleaning and sanitation.
UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) Processing
  • To extend the shelf life of milk and dairy products without refrigeration.
  • Boilers generate steam to heat the milk to very high temperatures for a few seconds before it is rapidly cooled and aseptically packaged.
Evaporation and Drying
  • To concentrate milk by removing water, producing products like condensed milk, evaporated milk, and milk powder.
  • Steam from boilers heats the milk in evaporators, causing water to evaporate. In the case of milk powder production, the concentrated milk is further dried in spray dryers using steam-heated air.
